Underfloor heating

Underfloor heating is an increasingly popular method to more efficiently heat your home. When installed (and controlled) properly it can offer real savings in keep your heating costs down, with the added benefit of being kinder to the environment.

Underfloor heating requires that your home is draft proof, uses water heated to a much lower temperature and is much more natural than convection based methods (radiators). It can also offer some health benefits as the circulation of air borne pollutants is less than that of radiators which is good news for children or adults with asthma or other respitory ailments.

How does it work?

Underfloor heating works by circulating warm water through pipes laid under the floor. The main source of heat then comes from directly under your feet – and from every point under your floor.

The heat in the room is then more evenly spread out, and not centred in the first instance at the radiator.

As a result, the water circulating in the underfloor system does not need to be as hot as it would in a conventional radiator, with the operating temperature of the water in an underfloor system typically being up to 26 degrees lower, bringing significant savings.

Are there other benefits?

The absence of radiators means that there is more space and less clutter in a room.

Small children can bump into radiators or even get (very minor) scalds from traditional radiators. This is not an issue with underfloor heating.

Room aesthetics – while very much a personal preference, many prefer the look of a room without a radiator.

Heat more evenly spread throughout the room – less prone to rooms having “a warmer side” nearer the radiator.
